LIGHTSCAPES III : 2005 – 2012

This exhibition is intended to showcase the development of my work during my time spent in Denmark since 2005, and brings together everything I have learned and created during this exciting stage of my career. I have thoroughly enjoyed the last seven years travelling between Durham and Denmark, working in several printmaking workshops in and around Copenhagen and Odense. I began with a residency at Statens Værksteder for Kunst in Copenhagen, which then propelled me on to other exciting opportunities, most importantly my membership to Fyns Grafiske Værksted in Odense, which has now become my second home! I’ve felt tremendously inspired by the artistic communities that have welcomed me so warmly during my time abroad, and for this reason I’ve chosen to exhibit the resulting body of work from this period, first, in Denmark.

I am a printmaker, and I’m fascinated by the different atmospheres that light creates in both our rural and urban environments. During my time in Denmark my work has been influenced by the more ‘urban’ scenery within which I have lived. I continue to be interested in depicting urban spaces that are infiltrated by different qualities of light. My most recent work draws inspiration from my immediate surroundings; including my own home, and the urban scenery of Durham, Newcastle, and Odense.
My compositions aim to combine different moods of light, with contrasting space and surface qualities. I enjoy working with a variety of etching techniques, including aquatint, ‘soft’ ground, ‘white’ ground and burnishing, which result in subtle tonal differences within my imagery. I rarely start with line, but instead focus on the highlights within an image, and thus create the composition by blocking out the areas that will remain light, instead of building up the image with dark line and shading.

The exhibition includes etchings created during my first residency at Statens Værksteder for Kunst in the autumn of 2005, along with many prints produced at Fyns Grafiske Værksted between 2006-2009 when I lived in Odense. Although I am now based in Durham, I make regular visits back to Fyns Grafiske Værksted to create new etchings, and there are several pieces in the show that are a hybrid of subject matters and techniques utilised in both Durham and Odense. The exhibition concludes with larger etchings created during my most recent residency at Statens Værksteder for Kunst, during the autumn of 2011. It was important to me to return to where it all began, and the 5 large square etchings complete the story so far... the body of work that has been inspired and moulded by my time in Denmark.

The exhibition opens in Odense on February 4th, and the new etchings will also be available to view at my studio and Seasons gallery in Durham from this date, The new prints will soon be in stock at both Galleri5000 in Odense, and Northern Print in Newcastle .
